Svart Hotel is an ambitious project, looking to the future, in which technology is combined with luxury to create an innovative concept of hospitality increasingly respectful of the environment starting with zero emissions and over time ‘energy- positive’.
The idea was born from a journey by its CEO, Jan-Gunnar Mathisen , to the Svartisen glacier, not far from Meløy in the north of Norway, immersed in a national park, extending for more than 2000 km with a various and luxuriant nature.
The beauty of this landscape pushed Jan-Gunnar to pursue the dream of building a hotel with the intention to make it a symbol of modern and eco-sustainable architecture, based on innovative solutions with a positive impact on our planet. A transparent and shared approach to fuel a truly circular and global economy in the hotel and real estate sectors thanks to strategic actions supported by research centers such as Net Zero Labs AS.
The management of the Hotel will be the responsibility of Six Senses, a hotel chain already attentive to the total well-being of the person which is based according to their vision on six main pillars:
• Rest (use of handmade mattresses and organic linen fabrics)
• Natural nutrition
• Spa and highly specialized treatments
• Fitness
• Mindfulness
• Personal growth (experiences helping our evolution)
Not only that, there is a serious commitment to preserving and developing the treasures of each territory in which a Six Senses property is located and elsewhere through a sustainability program, involving multiple dimensions (environmental, social, architectural) thanks to the establishment of a sustainability fund.
A vision perfectly fitting with the Svart concept, designed according to the Powerhouse standard by the Snøhetta architecture studio based in Oslo. A cutting-edge lab, which unites architects and global minds, with projects all over the world and with the ambitious goal of ‘building with zero CO2 emissions’ in the near future thanks to continuous experiments and collaborations with various research centers.
But what will the Svart Hotel look like?
With a circular shape – mostly made of wood – on stilts that sink into the water to minimize the impact on the seabed, recalling the “fiskehjell”, wooden buildings used for drying fish, and the traditional houses of fishermen, “rorbue”. It will be located in the Holandsfjorden enjoying 360° of sunlight, the main source of energy, thanks also to the solar panels placed on the roof with the specific intention of becoming zero-emission, off-grid and zero-waste within five years.
99 rooms, 4 restaurants – with products from its own ecological farms – a 1000 m2 spa and a resident health concierge who will allow guests to choose the diet suited to their nutritional needs and advice on planning personalized treatments.
But what is most important to its creators is the possibility, through an educational center, to learn all the design phases of the Hotel and the good practices to become increasingly ‘eco-friendly’.
Trips and culinary experiences are already being organized by the Svart Team (Tommy and Veronika Varhaugvik and Farnosh Dalili) to spread the word about the project and to experience the glacier and the forest around it more closely.
An undoubtedly strong impact to understand how all technology – including artificial intelligence used to monitor energy consumption in real time – is at the service of safeguarding nature, to make it healthy again.
We will follow the evolution of Svart Hotel with great curiosity and will certainly keep you updated.
